Analysis of the Effect of Content and Format of Variable Message Signs on Drivers' Diversion Behavior (Case Study: Tehran)
Variable message signs are known as one of the intelligent transportation systems In the Islamic Republic of Iran, most studies have been conducted to find the optimal position of variable message signs; and other influential factors in increasing the effectiveness of these signs have been less studied. It is possible to design a suitable and effective message for drivers by knowing other factors such as content and format. In this research, the behaviour of drivers route diversion due to the change of content and message format of the variable message sign analyzed. For this purpose, a questionnaire designed and a choice model constructed. The results obtained by the binary logit model show that the most desirable way to display the message of change to the proposed route due to accidents is when the message of the accident shows the location of the accident, the duration of the predicted delay in the route and the proposed route in three-line with four flashing lights on the right side of the panel and the image on the left. However, when the dimensions and reading distance of the board are limited, the text of the one-word accident with a large font can be used instead of the previously suggested text. It is expected that the results of the constructed model and its application in the message of variable message boards will increase safety, reduce accidents and traffic and be more effective in following the rules of traffic and variable message signs.
