Abstract:
Indigenous architecture comprises one of the most important “forms of the social organization of space” that can be understood by studying the connection between the physicality of architecture and the life and culture of inhabitants. The indigenous architecture of Iran constitutes part of the cultural-historical continuity of Iranian architecture, and the learning and re-establishment of its conventional models can play an effective role in advancing contemporary architectural practices to preserve the cultural identity and authenticity in design, while also creating a valuable legacy for future generations. It also provides a differentiating criterion for distinguishing Iranian from non-Iranian architectural models. It shall be emphasized that this view does not mean reproducing the models and spaces already existent in contemporary times, rather, it means understanding how architecture relates to human beings and their surroundings and transforming it into contemporary spaces. This descriptive-analytical case study uses the space syntax plugin to describe the mathematical relationships governing space such as spatial depth, control value, choice value, integrity, and entropy by evaluating and analyzing the relationship of juxtaposing spaces to reveal past concepts that can play a role in today’s architecture. Also, based on the values mentioned and on maintaining the position and relationships between different spaces in the graph, express an existing model in contemporary language. The results indicate that although past and contemporary architecture differ structurally in terms of massing codes, using connecting and intermediate spaces, the spatial configuration of an existing model can be translated into contemporary architectural space, providing for the continuation of identity in contemporary architecture.
