Abstract:
Congregational mosques (masjid jāmi‘) were consistently the principal religious-social spaces in the Islamic world. The revitalization and use of these spaces require the recognition of these cultural heritages and attention to their histories. Iranian mosques' structure and spatial configuration were formed during the Seljuk dynasty, and in-between spaces are considered their main components. Since the quality of legibility in jāmi‘ mosques influences the affective connection between man and the architectural structure and enhances public attendance and gatherings in these spaces, it seems necessary to recognize how in-between spaces influence legibility in jāmi‘ mosques constructed in the Seljuk era. The main research question is the role of the in-between space configuration components in enhancing the quality of legibility in Seljuk jāmi‘ mosques. This study is historical-interpretive mixed-method research (quantitative and qualitative) carried out through deductive reasoning. The results indicated that in-between spaces, such as the central courtyard, Iwans, and entrances, With the arrangement of other spaces around the center of the mosque enhance legibility in Seljuk jāmi‘ mosques.
