Hero’s Journey in Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin in the View of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey
In recent years children’s literature is increasingly becoming popular. Children’s novels can be considered contemporary mythic narratives usually depicting heroes on their quest. Therefore, the concepts of hero, hero’s quest and the hero’s character development have been widely discussed and formulated by the scholars. Among the scholars one can name Joseph Campbell who discusses monomyth and formulates the structure of hero’s journey which is developed by other scholars and critics. Accordingly, the concern of the present study is to analyze the concept of hero’s journey and to investigate how the process of hero’s quest transforms the hero during the process of journey. To achieve this goal the study focuses on the novel Where the Mountain Meets the Moon analyzing the aforementioned concepts. The present study demonstrates that Grace Lin follows the structure and elements of mythic narratives to develop her hero’s character in Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, also the researcher discusses how the passing of the quest’s stages help the character to arrive to maturity and perfection which is the aim of the hero’s journey.
