Predicting Adolescent Internet Addiction: The Role of Ruminance and Loneliness

Examining the role of factors influencing internet addiction is important in maintaining the health of its users. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the role of rumination and loneliness in adolescents' Internet addiction.

The present study was descriptive-correlational. The statistical population was all male students of the first year of secondary school in Rabat Karim city in the academic year of 2021-2022, in which 240 people were selected based on Gajresi and Morgan table by available sampling method; They answered the Nolen-Hoeksema & Morrow (1991) Ruminant Questionnaire, Asher et al. (1984) Feeling Lonely, and Young (1996) Internet Addiction Questionnaires. Data were analyzed by Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression using SPSS software version 22.

The results showed that there is a positive and significant relationship between rumination and loneliness with Internet addiction (P <0.001). Also, 26.2% of rumination and loneliness were able to explain Internet addiction.

According to the results of this study, teaching students the correct use of new technology such as the Internet and also teaching how to cope with feelings of loneliness is essential.
