The Efficacy of Transactional Analysis Group Therapy on Signs of Social Anxiety Disorder

Background and

Social anxiety disorder (SAD), also called social anxiety, is a severe fear in social and interpersonal situations. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of transactional analysis group therapy (TA-GT) on decreasing SAD symptoms.

this study is a true experimental study with pretest-posttest and control group method. 21 clients who were referring to one counseling and psychological services center in Karaj were chosen based on screening method. In addition, they were randomly assigned into two same groups: control group (10 participants), TA-GT experimental group (11 participants). The participants completed the social phobia inventory (Conner, 2000) in pretest and posttest. The intervention methods were TA-GT that was administrated during 7 weekly 60-90 minutes sessions. Mean and standard deviation were used for data analysis in the descriptive level and ANCOVA method was used at the inference level.

The results of the study showed that social anxiety disorder symptoms in experimental groups were significantly increased (p<0.01).

The finding of this research suggests that transactional analysis group therapy could be a successful intervention for decreasing Social Anxiety Disorder Symptoms.
