Related factors to the contraceptive use in women of Zahedan, 1999

Background and In spite of accessibility to contraceptive methods and devices, every year, 400,000 to 500,000 unwanted pregnancies are occuring in our country, mostly because of lake of contraceptive uses. This study was conducted to determine the relating factors to contraceptive use in married women of reproductive ages. In this qualitative research 5 groups of women who attended at health centers of Zahedan, participated in a focus group discussion. Two groups were selected from the central areas and three from the city Suburb. In economically poor families, women believed that the siblings can provide financial and non financial supports for their parents in aging years and in economically good families, competition and wrong believes were most common. Women in both groups mentioned that siblings can stabilize the inter – family relationships and family stability. They believed that the women usually don’t accept the tubectomy methods because of their unstable socio-economic status, and men don’t accept vasectomy because of socio-cultural barriers and wrong believes. Promoting the appropriate use of contraceptive methods, re-instructing the workers of family planning services, clients education, couples education in pre-marital classes and public education on contraceptive use are suggested.
