Relativism and philosophy for Children in Lipman's Model: Fantasy or Reality
Author(s):
Abstract:
Philosophy for children in the style of Lipman is liable to post – modernist pluralism and resultant relativism deriving from it. Adopting positions of eliminating problem or unquestionable acceptance is hasty and self-seeking affair. Review of philosophy for children in this respect helps us in providing a suitable model. Sensitivity to the background, non-suggestive class discussions and discussions which have no definite goal are characteristics which make relativism a real option. Kennedy criticizes it because it is slow-moving. Lipman considers logic and central criterion sufficient for rejecting relativism. And since truth and falsity of propositions depends on materials which are surveyed in sciences other than logic, and criteria if they are placed at current of relativism are like a knife which cuts its handle. Although attention to natural unity of children reduces the chaos of relativism and often leads them to common agreement in their philosophical classes, but it is not a sufficient condition and hence it seems necessary to propose a systematic model, including instructions which helps instructor so as to lead children to truth-seeking and comprehensive unity, without going to extremes.
