Iran, The new Iraq and Persian Gulf Regional Security System

This article studies the status of Iran and Iraq in the Persian Gulf regional security system in the light of new developments in the region. The author believes that Iraq is no longer considered a threatening actor and the role of Shier element has been increased in the power equations in the region. These changes have made Iran and Iraq closer to each other. As a result, the formation of a new security system based on these new developments seems necessary. After introducing the new characteristics of such a security arrangements, the author concludes that no regional security system will be successful without collective efforts among all regional countries. Cooperation among Persian Golf countries requires leaving aside threat perceptions and strengthening economic and strategic ties.
