The Place of Temporary Marriage in Shiite Jurisprudence and the Practicality or Impracticality of Its Promotion in Iran

Temporary marriage is specific to Shiite jurisprudence, and is also recognised in Iranian Civil Code. In recent years, more attention has been paid to this type of marriage, and some of the authorities have argued that this type of marriage can be a solution for the sexual needs of those who have to wait for a long time, after their puberty, to be able to enter into permanent marriage. Nevertheless, temporary marriage must be regulated by the government, in order to reduce its negative side effects. After a brief discussion on legal and jurisprudential aspects of the topic, this research proceeds with a sociological examination of the issue of temporary marriage.
