Comparison of Gutta percha as a membrane and cytoplast membrane (extra membrane) for treatment of bone defect in parietal bone of rabbit

Membrane is an important factor in regeneration of bony defect. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of Gutta percha and cytoplast membranes on the regeneration of bony defect in parietal bone of rabbit histologically. This experimental histologic study was done on 4 female white Newzland rabbits. 3 bicortical defects were created in parietal bone of each 4 rabbit by 8mm trephine bur. The anterior defects were covered by unresorbable cytoplast membranes and the posterior defects were covered by Gutta percha membrane (experimental group). The middle defects were not covered by any material (control group). Two rabbits were sacrificed after 20 days and the others after 40 days. The samples were sent for histological examinations. The histological results indicated that the volume of newly formed bone matrix was significantly greater in the experimental groups (cytoplast, gutta percha) than the control groups. But the volume of new bone matrix was not significant between the two experimental groups. The low inflammatory reaction was seen in 20 day's cases. But no inflammatory reaction was seen in 40 days cases. The Gutta percha membrane like cytoplast membrane has biocompatibility and space making properties that could promote bone regeneration.
