A Review of the Ways of Promoting Reading Habits among Working Women and Housewives; a Case Study of Women in Shiraz

The level of reading ability is one of the major indicators of cultural development in a country. Thus, it is essential to identify factors affecting reading habits advancement. Not only women represent half the society, but because of their strong relations among their family members, they play a significant role in transferring reading habits to other members of the family. In the present study, by distributing questionnaires among 363 working women and housewives in Shiraz, researchers investigated the factors influencing reading habits of women in Shiraz. Findings show that major factors include: the level of parents reading, the level of reading in childhood and younghood, age, marriage status, reading eagerness of husbands, access to information and computers are among the most important factors influencing reading habits of this study subjects. Finally, suggestions and recommendations are made based on the present research.
