Abstract:
As a crime occurred repeatedly in the course of wars, sexual violence is conceptionally more extensive than the rape. In the past, sexual violence was committed for intimidation of the enemy forces; today, however, it has assumed a new form and is committed in an organized manner for racial cleansing. Its evident and striking examples were events occurred during civil wars in Rwanda and (ex)Yugoslavia. Thus, this offence has been regarded as one of the crimes against humanity and war crimes in the Statute of the International Penal Court. In this way, human society can take great stepts to prevent repetition of such events. In the present article, instances of sexual violence which has been regarded as crimes in the Statute of the International Penal Court will be studied.
