The Role of Mother's Identity in Shaping Gender Identity of Adolescent Girls in Tehran

Identification of teenagers is one of issues that human sciences experts have always regarded its. Formation of identity, acceptance of values and roles of accepted by family and society is underlie of many of the issues the future of youth. The purpose of this study is to understand the role of mothers’ identity in shaping gender identity of girls in Tehran. Theoretical framework is based on the theory of socialization and parenting style’s Bamrynd. Sample was 10 samples from the first year of high school students in Tehran along with 10 people of their mothers. Research method was qualitative and used techniques were interview and content analysis. Results showed that mothers who were satisfied with their gender identity, sex is important for them; child's gender is important to them, have used authoritarian or neglect style of education of their children. Mothers who did not consent of their sex, child sex was not important for them used democratic educational style. Thus, gender identity and educational practices of mothers to their children can play a role in the formation of gender identity of their children. Mothers who had dual gender identity and were in an effort to gain equal right with men were raising their children so that they have male and female characteristics together.
