Assessment of the Prevalence of Iron Deficiency Anemia in Pregnant Women referring to Ghaem HospitalPages 1-7Introduction
Iron deficiency anemia is defined as hemoglobin < 11g/dl in the first and third trimesters، and < 10. 5 g/dl in the second trimester of pregnancy. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common cause of anemia during pregnancy and leads to important complications such as low birth weight، preterm birth and so on during pregnancy. This study was performed with aim to determine the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women and evaluation of its relationship with some variables.
MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted on 600 pregnant women referred to morning Clinic of Ghaem Hospital in 2010. Data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire in which required information including gestational age، gravidity and parity، number of abortions، educational level and household income were recorded. Data analysis was performed by SPSS software (version 16).
ResultsIn this study، the prevalence of anemia was 11. 2% in the subjects. There was significant relationship between age of pregnant women and anemia (P≤0. 001)، anemia and age during the first pregnancy (P=0. 001) and anemia and the time interval between the current and the previous pregnancies (P=0. 001). In addition، there was a significant relation between the prevalence of anemia and gestational age (P=0. 0005)، parity (P≥0. 005)، gravidity (P=0. 001)، educational level (p≥0. 0001) and income (p≥0. 0001).
ConclusionIncreased parity and gravidity leads to an increase in the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia. Regarding the fact that iron deficiency anemia is a preventable complication، specific attention to prevention programs pregnant women and empowering health care policies during pregnancy can be one of the most important priorities in the country.

Pages 8-14IntroductionBreast-feeding is one of the healthiest methods of child''s nutrition. The mother''s weight is one of the factors associated with breastfeeding. Regarding to the importance of nutrition with on infants'' growth and development، this study was performed with aim to investigate the role of mothers'' body mass index (BMI) in the success of exclusive nutrition with breastfeeding.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was performed on 400 women who had 6 months old infant referred to Mashhad Health Centers. Data collection tool was a questionnaire which was developed based on previous studies and sources. Data was collected by interviews with mothers and referring to health documents of families. Data was analyzed by SPSS software (version 16. 5)، and Chi-square and t-tests، ANOVA، Pearson Correlation and multivariable Regression tests.ResultsAccording to the results of this study، the mothers with normal BMI had more exclusive breastfeeding (P=0. 028). In terms of maternal pre-pregnancy BMI، 193 mothers (34. 2%) were in normal group، 27 (6. 8%) lean، 137 (34. 2%) overweight، and 43 (10. 75%) obese. Mean duration of exclusive breastfeeding was 142. 78±58. 34 days ranging 0-225 days. This mean in obese mothers degree 2 was 96. 89±81. 89 days، in obese mothers degree 1 was 134. 35±62. 26 days، in overweight mothers was 147. 44±54. 81 days،143/03±58/40 day، in normal BMI mothers was 143. 03±58. 40 days، and in lean mothers was 143. 37±58. 46 days.DiscussionMothers with normal BMI were more successful in exclusive breastfeeding. Therefore، follow-up of planning for balancing mother’s weight before pregnancy seems to be necessary. It is recommended to repeat the study to consider cultural differences. Keywords: BMI, Exclusive breastfeeding, Pre, pregnancy

Pages 15-21IntroductionDeath of pregnant mother is an important public health indicator that reflects both the quality of health care system and the role of women in the society. This study was performed with aim to determine the rate and causes of maternal mortality using Geographic Information System in Kermanshah.MethodIn this cross-sectional study، the recorded cases of maternal mortality and cause of death from 2001 to 2012 was extracted via census from family health unit of the province health center. To determine mortality rates، the cases of maternal death per year were divided to the number of live births. Information about the maternity facilities and literacy ratio was obtained from Kermanshah Heath Deputy and Governor. The data were analyzed using Stata 12 and Arc GIS 10. 1 software and χ2 test and linear regression. P<0. 05 was considered significant.ResultsThe mean age of subjects was 31. 3±7. 3 years. 65 cases (65. 3%) were placed in high-risk pregnancy group. The rate of maternal mortality during 12-years was reported 25. 9 deaths per 100،000 live births، and mortality rate had 1. 3 unit decrease per each year of change (P=0. 04). In this study، the highest maternal mortality rate was in Northwest and Southwest cities of the province. The common cause of maternal death was bleeding (28. 3%) and abruption (28. 3%). The literacy rate in any city had an impact on the cause and rate of mortality، so that in the cities where literacy ratio was higher، the death rate was lower، and also more causes of death were indirect causes (P=0. 02).Conclusionmaternal mortality rate in some cities of this province is very high and higher than the mean of province and country. Keywords: Causes, Geographic Information System, Mortality rate of pregnant mother
