The role of dimensions of temperament and character in prediction of positive and negative symptoms in schizophrenia patients

The aim of the present research was to determine the role of dimensions of temperament and character in prediction of positive and negative symptoms in schizophrenia patients. The research sample consisted of 100 men that who from among patients with schizophrenia were selected by sampling method. To collect the data, Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PNSS) were used. The results of Pearson correlation coefficient showed that temperament and character are related to negative symptoms in schizophrenia patients; while temperament and character arent related to positive symptoms in. The results of stepwise multiple regression analysis showed dimensions of self– transcendence, cooperativeness and harm avoidance were found to be the best predictors for negative symptoms. While self– transcendence and harm avoidance were found to be the best predictors for positive symptoms in schizophrenia patients. These results have important implications in psychopathological of schizophrenia disease. These results suggest that the temperamental and character profiles of schizophrenia patients may well be of important prognostic value in the planning of cognitive enhancement therapy.
