Antibacterial and antifungal activity of hydroacoholic and etheric extracts of Quercus brantii

Quercus brantii (Fagaceae) is the predominant species in north and center of Iran. In this study we aimed to investigate antimicrobial activity of Q. brantii. Hydroacoholic and etheric extract of Q. brantii were obtained with maceration method. Inhibitory effects of hydroacoholic and etheric extract of Q. brantii was tested on Gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus), Gram negative bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Esherichia coli) and fungi (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida albicans). Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determined by micro broth dilution method. Hydroacoholic and etheric extract of Q. brantii showed antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi. Inhibitory effect of extracts on Gram positive bacteria was more than that of Gram negative bacteria. Hydroacoholic and etheric extract of Q. brantii showed weaker antimicrobial activity than control antibiotics (tetracycline, gentamycin, nistatin). The results of this study indicate in vitro antimicrobial activity of hydroacoholic and etheric extract of Q. brantii against Gram positive, Gram negative bacteria and fungi.
