Clinical report of abdominal hernia with abscess in pregnant cow

Abdominal hernia is one of the cases may rarely happen in late pregnancy in cow due to the weakness of abdominal muscles. In pregnant animals, abdominal dilatation or strain at the parturition time are the causes of weakness of abdominal muscles. This article reports a abdominal hernia with abscess in a 4-year Holstein pregnant cow referred to the Veterinary Clinic of Urmia University. Clinical signs such as pain, anorexia, purulent discharges from the distal abdomen were observed in the primary inspections. Rectal examination showed that the cow is 7 month pregnant. Heavy uterus with fetus closed to skin in the distal part of abdomen was found in Ultrosonography which was diagnosed as abdominal hernia. An abscess in the distal part of abdomen caused a great pain and purulent discharges. Depletion of the abscess and antibiotic therapy was done after anesthesia. The case was followed up and the results showed that the animal had the successful parturition after 2 months and the calf was safe.
