The Evolution of Zayandehrood River Enviroenment and its Interaction with Isfahan City

Isfahan is a historic city evolved from a prosperous village into the Safavid capital in early 18th century. The most important natural element of the city, the Zayandehrood River has played a key role in the formation and evolution of this city. Through a survey of manuscripts, travel accounts and historic maps, this paper attempts to clarify the impact of this river on the Safavid Master Plan for converting Isfahan to a magnificent capital city. The newly introduced urban elements included Chahar-Bagh Boulevard as a catalytic urban element for stimulating urban recreation commerce and development; Hezar Jarib recreation gardens; new urban quarters on the south of the river; and building famous multi-functional bridges over the river.
