Parenting styles and adolescent's self-esteem: Mediatory role of satisfying basic psychological needs

Using Path analysis, the present study was an attempt to investigate the relationship between parenting styles and adolescent's self-esteem with regard to the mediatory effects of basic psychological needs satisfaction 238 first grade high school male students in Urmia city took part in this study by answering the following questionnaires: parenting styles, basic psychological needs, and self-esteem. Findings showed that basic psychological needs satisfaction had a mediatory role in the relationship between parenting styles and self-esteem: permissive and authoritative parenting style exerted an indirect positive influence on male student's self-esteem through basic psychological needs satisfaction. In addition, authoritarian parenting style had an indirect negative influence on self-esteem through basic psychological needs satisfaction. Basic psychological needs satisfaction can mediate the relationship between parenting styles and self-esteem.
