Relationship between extraversion, neuroticism and whistle-blowing
Abstract:
Whistle- blowers are people who expose misconducts or unethical behaviors that exists in the organization. It seems that personality is one reason why some employees are more incline than others to engage in whistle-blowing behavior Measurement of personality with narrow band form can''t detect significant relations properly، so in the current research we apply facet measure of two personality dimensions which contain many subscales. The main purpose of this research was to investigate the relation between whistle-blowing and personality (two scales of extraversion and neuroticism). To this goal، 1228 participants from a big holding in Tehran were selected using random sampling method from the total Population. Questionnaires which were used in this research included two scale of Eyseneck Personality Profiler namely Extraversion، Neuroticism (EPP) and Whistle-blowing Questionnaire (WBQ). The results showed that there was a significant positive correlation between self expression and aggression with whistle-blowing; and a negative significant correlation between Low self-esteem، anxiety، guilt & dependence with whistle-blowing. So، it seems that there are some relationships between some personality characteristics and ethical behavior of whistle-blowing، and these results can be used in selecting personnel in organizations. Hence it may be possible to select individuals with specific personality traits so that the ethical code of conduct in the organization is with held and counter productive behavior within the organization may be inhibited.
