The role of methadone on spiritual health of addicts

Background

Addiction affects all aspects of life including the spiritual status of addicts. Some studies have reported improvement in the quality of life in addicts treated with Methadone. The purpose of this study was to survey the role of methadone on spiritual health of addicts.

Materials And Methods

This historical cohort study was done on two groups of addicts. Case group consisted of patients on methadone and addicted patients who had not received methadone were placed in the control group; effort was made to match the individuals in the control group as much as possible with the case group. Two components of spiritual health (beliefs about existence and religion) were tested by means of a standard test consisting of 20 indicators with Likert scale and 7 choices. Analysis was done by Mann Whitney test.

Results

Test was carried on 250 cases and 250 controls. Score in case group was 6.01±0.49 with P Value 0.003 and in control group it was 2.72±0.46 with P Value 0.002.

Conclusion

It seems that methadone can cause improvement in spiritual health of addicts.
