Role of Land Forms of Tehran Northern Mountains (Valleys) in Terms of Defense in Asymmetric Wars (Focus on Inactive Defense)

War is and will be an everlasting concern for man. The message of the Islamic Revolution of Iran is protection of the national sovereignty and independence in the light of the lofty perspectives of late Imam Khomeini and taking predictive measures against any likely threats. Tehran, the capital, is the most critical city such that investigation of the role of its land form deems necessary so that the findings can be used to defeat enemy threats in asymmetric wars (e.g., bombings and missile attacks). To this end, this study tries to address the way the Alborz mountain range can be employed in inactive defense in asymmetric wars likely to launch by non-regional forces. As a descriptive-analytic research, the study utilized a researcher-made questionnaire, compassed of four main categories based on Likert scale in order to rank the nine valleys accordingly. For this purpose, 20 military and inactive defense experts attempted it. Chi-square analysis was run to explain the nature of the variables separately, cumulatively and geographically. The findings showed that the valleys are not homogeneous, comparison of mean scores revealed that the northeastern valleys (Oshanfasham Valley) enjoys most of the characteristics in terms of camouflage, concealment and cover, establishment of main infrastructures and shelters (natural and artificial). The study, then, suggests certain practical approaches on how to employ such land forms in asymmetric wars.
