Determine the infection facilitators in peripheral IV catheter in viewpoint of nurses in medical-surgical wards in hospitals, Isfahan University of medical sciences

Abstract:
Background
IV therapy is essential for providing electrolytes, fluid, and hydration and medication therapy that one important access is peripheral IV catheter. In spite of value of this method, peripheral IV catheter is a main cause for Nosocomial infections. The purpose of this study determined the infection facilitators in peripheral IV catheter in viewpoint of nurses in medical-surgical wards in hospitals, Isfahan University of medical sciences, Iran.
Methods
This was a descriptive study conducted in nurses with randomized sampling methodology. A total number of 379 nurses from 3 hospitals affiliated to Isfahan University of Medical Sciences were enrolled. A questionnaire contains 2 parts (clinical and demographic characteristics information and infection facilitators) was used for data collection. The data were analyzed by carried out using SPSSV18 with using descriptive and analytic statistics.
Findings
The majority of cases were female (80.6%) and their ages ranged from 22 to 52 years. The most common infection facilitators in peripheral IV catheter in viewpoint of nurses were included washing hands before procedure (100%), gloves (99.2%), proper disinfection of the insertion site IV catheter (97%), insert IV catheter in healthy skin (97%), hair shave the location of IV catheter insertion (95.7%), on time IV catheter replacement (94.5%) and consider sterilization principle in inter and remote the IV catheter (94%).With regard to spearman test, there was a significant association between infection control nurse's view point with age (P=0.001, r= - 0.48) and work record (P=0.02, r= - 0.55). Also Mann-Whitney U test showed there was a significant association between infection control nurse's view point with gender (P=0.04).
Conclusions
The findings of this study highlighted the importance and the necessity of a closer and deeper attention to infection facilitators to decline the infection caused by peripheral IV catheters
