The effect of three ergonomics intervention on work-related posture and musculoskeletal disorders in office workers (computer users) Gas Company of Isfahan

Background
Studies on the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDS) in computer users is high. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of three ergonomics intervention on body posture and musculoskeletal disorders in office workers (computer users) in Isfahan gas company. These interventions include education, sports and installation of software on computer systems.
Methods
This study was carried out on 98 office workers in Isfahan gas company, in three phases (Phase I: Evaluation of Existing Conditions - Phase II: Implementation of interventions - Phase III: Review) for 7 months. In this study, participants were divided into four groups (T = training group, S = sports group, N = software group C = control group).In this study, information was collected two months before the intervention and 3 months after intervention. Nordic questionnaires for the evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders and RULA method were used to assess physical conditions and the effect of each intervention on musculoskeletal discomfort was studied. The collected data was analyzed by SPSS software.
Findings
Based on the evaluation of the first phase, 53.3% of participants work between 4 to 8 hours per day with computer. 58 % of participants stated that their job is related to neck pain. Also, 39% of participants have noted that the pain is related to their jobs.Musculoskeletal disorders, in the studied groups were compared before and after intervention. Reduction of musculoskeletal discomfort in training group, were observed after the intervention. Reducing pain in the back neck, knee, wrist, and back of the McNemar test was significant (P ≤ 0/05) Postural assessment score in the left and right sides of the body, respectively, 25 and 20 points dropped.
Conclusions
This study showed that ergonomic interventions can reduce symptoms of musculoskeletal discomforts. Given that all the seats were fully adjustable, the following courses people were able to adjust their work environment. The interesting thing was that regardless of the effectiveness of each intervention, most participants agreed with this intervention and this shows that people are unhappy with the situation and are looking for a change.
