The Effects of Uncanny Literature in Ghada Al-Sammans

Message:
Abstract:
Uncanny Literature that has been introduced by Tzvetan Todorov (1939), the Bulgarian theorist in the book “A Prologue in uncanny Literature” One of the literary genres that in its encounter with events and occurrences that the reader cannot decide in the first sight whether they are realistic or unrealistic, natural or supernatural. Throughout the novel, the reader realizes the events are realistic and assumes the incidents natural with rational and logical justification. Moreover, Todorov postulates some conditions in the Fantasy Literature, each of them is related to hesitance which is the most important feature of Fantasy Literature. This hesitance begins with the narrator and characters and is transferred to the reader. In this paper we have tried to study and analyze the novel “Beirut Nightmares” from the view of Fantasy Literature. Among the elements and techniques introduced defining characters, points of view, focal disruption, and interior monologue show the hesitance of character. Stream of consciousness, theme, association of meanings, and contrast give the reader this chance to discover the hesitance of character and text. Another point is that, each of the elements and techniques either causes hesitance or the result of it.
