Prevalence and Predisposing factors of urinary tract infections in preschool girls in Gerash city

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial infections in children and causes a lot of complications. This study aimed to determine the Prevalence and Predisposing factors of urinary tract infections in preschool girls in Gerash city. This is a cross-section analytical study that was conducted in Gerash city in1392. The sample size consisted of 222 preschool girls with an average age of 5.6 years old, from 7 kindergartens that were studied by census method. The urine samples were cultured in laboratory and Colony counters greater than 105 CFU/ml was considered as positive. Demographic questionnaire, risk factors questionnaire and symptoms of UTI was Completed by interviews with children and their parents simultaneously. The validity of questionnaire was confirmed by 10 Professors and it’s reliability was confirmed with a Cranach’s alpha of 90% and a correlation coefficient of 91%. Out of 222 cases, pathogens bacterial cultures of 4 cases (1.8%) were positive that two of them had asymptomatic UTI. one person had UTI with dysuria, another one had UTI with flank pain, abdominal pain and itching in the genital area (as the first sign). pathogenic factor in three cases was Proteus and one was E. coli. The main predisposing factor in positive cases was the improper washing of the perinea region. The result showed that children have used protective factors against the urinary tract infections in a high level, which caused significant impact on reducing the incidence of infection.
