A Comparative Study on the Muqarnas Artworks of Iran with other Islamic Nations in Regard to the Genette Intertextuality System

In this paper it is sought to introduce the concepts and characteristics of muqarans artworks of Iran and a number of muqarans art pieces from other Islamic countries. Muqarnas artworks of Iran include: Jami mosque of Qom, Imamzadeh Imam Isfahan Doorway, Khangah of Sheikh Abdulsamad Esfahani, Natanz, The mausoleum of Bayyazid Bastami Shahrood, the Masudieh mansion of Tehran, Aghabozorg Kashan School, Imamzadeh Babaqasem and the Sheikh al Islam house of Isfahan. Furthermore, the well-known muqarans works of other Islamic countries include: Abdulaziz Khan School in Bokhara, Gur Amir in Samarqand, Sister’s hall in Spain and Muqarans building in Turkey. Therefore, according to the theoretical principals of intertextuality and the use of a descriptive and comparative methodology, the data of this paper were deliberated upon and investigated. The comparison is carried out via “genette” method and is carried out via library and documentation research and seeks to study the similarities and dissimilarities between Iran and Turkey, Uzbekistan and Spain. The findings of the study suggest that the form and space of muqarnas apart from their geometrical features consist of various motifs including herbal, geometric, animal, human and inscriptional. The variation among the mentioned motifs is mostly due to social concepts derived from a cultural and artistic atmosphere of different historical stages and the progression of the basic materials used. The muqarans designs at times included or exclude motifs; however, major changes are not seen since their geometrical overall feature is fixed and is conveyed from century to century.
