The study of alienation from school and its impact on academic performance of students

This aim of this current research was the examination of the relationship between alienation from school and academic performance in Khaf City. For this purpose, Four hundred thirty-five (277 males and 185 females) high school student from Khaf City were randomly selected through a multi-phase cluster sampling method answered questions regarding alienation from school. Data were collected with the questionnaire consisting of three basic dimensions of powerlessness, normlessness and social isolation that reliability using Cronbach alpha coefficient of this dimensions were calculated 0.88, 0.96 and 0.97, respectively. SPSS and AMOS software was used for data analysis.
The findings revealed that alienation from school and academic performance had a negative and significant relationship. Also, the results of the relationship between dimensions of alienation from school and academic performance showed that normlessness and social isolation had a negative and significant relationship with academic performance; however, powerlessness had a positive and significant relationship with academic performance. Males and females, also, had different alienation, powerlessness, normlessness and social isolation, thus, male students have had higher scores in the three normlessness, social isolation and alienation, while, female students have experienced more powerlessness. Finally, students of different grads have had different scores in alienation from school and its dimensions. So, the results of this research showed that more alienation from school will reduce student’s academic performance.
