A Critical Book Review to the Persian Version of Goldenberg & Goldenberg's Family Therapy: An Overview, Translated by Hossein Shahi Baravati, Naqshbandi, and Arjmand

The fifth edition of Family Therapy: A General Overview written by Goldenberg and Goldenberg (2000) was translated into Persian by Hossein Shahi Baravati, the Late Naqshbandi, and Arjmand. Being published 13 times from 2004 until 2014 under the title of Family Therapy by Ravan publisher, the book was accepted increasingly in all the universities of Iran, and was taught as an academic textbook in the last 10 years. The findings of this paper were gathered by applying the documentary method and by review and clarification of the scope of the advantages and deficiencies of the book and reveal that this book have a considerable deficiencies despite of acceptable congruence of the translation with the original text, its expressiveness and fluency, and having admirable terminology. Some of these deficiencies related to the fact that, in comparison with the latest version of the original English volume, the translated version suffers from low integrity and updates and has a mediocre comprehensiveness, so that it is more like a general and uncompleted overview about family therapy rather than a standard university textbook. The estimations indicated that the usefulness of the teaching of this book as a textbook for BA students is mediocre and for students in higher education levels is low. In addition, it can be said that in the field of family therapy, using compiled books with Cultural Sensitivity, is more efficacious than using translated books of foreign authors. Therefore, it is recommended that compiled books should meet the cultural harmonization.
