Etymology of the Quranic word HMD (praise) in the Semitic ‎languages

Hamd’ is one of the key words in the context of worship in the Holy ýQuran. The word in Arabic dictionaries and Quranic exegeses ýinterpreted to ‘praise’ in view to denotation meaning, And in view to ýconnotation, its relationship with a sense of ‘ShKR’ (thank)ýþ þand ‘MDH’ ýý(praise) also been debated.
It seems that due to the uncertainty raised in this matter, especially in the ýconnotation (not in the denotation sense) it is necessary to study its ýexact meaning with new semantic methods to understand it more ýtangible.
The article follows the approach of historical-comparative linguistics to ýreach the etymology of the stem ‘HMD’ in the Semitic language sources, ýand finally, it has been found that the more ancient meaning of this root ýthat was being understood in the preceding period of the Semitic ýlanguage was ‘desire’. The use of this stem in the sense of ‘desire’ has ýbeen recorded in the texts of the central northern branch of Semitic ýlanguages.ý
