Abstract:
Background And Aim
Use of media education has been noted to control the problems of patients with chronic diseases by health professional staffs in recent decades. This study aimed to determine the effect of the movie- based education on sleep quality in patients with bronchial asthma.
Methods
This randomized clinical trial was conducted on patients with bronchial asthma referred to a clinical office in Borojen city, Iran. Fifty one eligible patients were conventionally selected but were randomly allocated to either the intervention group or the control group using block randomization. One patient in control group was excluded because of hospitalization. Education about sleep was provided for intervention group through showing a 15 minutes film which could be simply read by computer, DVD player and cell phone. In addition to demographic information, patient's sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Data were collected one week before and one month after intervention. Collected data were analyzed through statistical software of SPSS, version 21, using central tendency and dispersion indices as well as statistical testes including Chi square test, independent sample test, Fisher exact test, Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon test that P
Results
The results showed no statistically significant differences in the total quality of sleep and its dimensions in the test and control groups before the intervention (p>0.05). There was observed a significant difference by the total score of sleep quality and dimensions of subjective sleep quality, sleep disturbances and sleep latency in both groups post intervention (p=0.001). There was, however, observed no statistically significant differences in the scores of dimensions such as sleep duration, sleep efficiency, use of sleep medication and day time dysfunction between the test and control groups after intervention(p>0.05).
Conclusion
The movie-based education could improve the quality of sleep in patients with bronchial asthma. The further studies were suggested to examine its effectiveness in patients with other chronic diseases due to the ease of its implementation. If the results of this study would confirm, this method may be considered as a way to teach the patient to self-care at home
