In Sartre’s existentialism, everyone is forced to choose, and he/she makes all other humans committed by this choice. According to him, human, as the owner of free will, chooses some values, and so, creates his/her own morality and thereby, invites others to commit. Sartre extends this moral choice to the field of art because he believes that in both fields of ethics and art, and particularly, literature and theater, we are in the same situation of creation. Therefore, according to Sartre, humans create literature and theater the same way they create ethics. From this perspective, theater, according to Sartre, is accompanied by commitment and consequently morality. However, this artwork does not guide the audience passively and through ethics, it calls them to participate actively in reconstructing and recreation of the work as a model to create the world the way it is not but should be. In this writing, in search for the ethics and art in Sartre’s philosophy, we show that although according to Sartre, theater is a moral guideline, the artist is not the only creator of this morality, the audience also participates actively in creating, and inventing values derived from the work. By holding such an approach, we want to show that, according to Sartre’s definition of art, theater, ethics, and their relationship, the theater can be viewed as a moral guideline; however, this guideline is not just invented by the artist, and the audience in the creation of values and developing applied morality derived from the work of art as well.
