Abstract:
Introduction
Motivating people to participate in physical activities is challenging, especially in patients with hypertension. According to the role of trans-theoretical model in determining behavioral change and to time it, this study conducted with the aim of determining the relationships between constructs of trans-theoretical model and physical activity in patients with hypertension.
Methods
This cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted on 144 patients with hypertension using purposive sampling method. Data was collected by a questionnaire related to constructs of trans-theoretical model including stages of change, self efficacy, decisional balance, processes of change and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) short form. Data was analyzed by SPSS 21 and tests of one way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Kruskal–Wallis, Pearson’s, and Spearman’s correlation coefficients.
Results
The mean age of participants was 53 ± 7.70 years; 11.8% of the participants were in the pre-contemplation stage, 29.9% in contemplation, 33.3% in preparation, 19.4% in action, and 5.6% in maintenance. Significant relationships were found in the PA with stages of change (r = 0.592, P
Conclusions
According to the relationship of constructs of trans-theoretical model with physical activity behavior, it is suggested to be used in designing interventions for improving physical activity behaviors.
