Abstract:
Aims
Fasting has sometimes been deemed as a trigger for the dry-eye syndrome. Hence, as an academic community mission, to answer the religious and scientific doubts; herein, we tried to trace any probable correlation between dry-eye and fasting by mining the data published on the tear proteome change during fasting besides similar changes during two physiologic conditions which seem to be in strong correlation with the dry-eye (smoking and diabetes).
Methods A comprehensive survey was made on the published research articles, to extract data according to our inclusion criteria and compare them between the dry-eye proven conditions versus fasting-induced ones.
Findings and Conclusion Our findings indicated that fasting related tear proteome change could not be matched with the proteome change in dry-eye susceptible cases and hence fasting may not be considered as a trigger for inducing the permanent dry-eye syndrome; although a temporary feeling of dry-eye due to the normal body water loss is plausible.
