The proof of the Sun A comparative study of Rumi's theological and mystical ideas On The Divine Names

Author(s):
Abstract:
What, in the holy Quran and the common usage by Muslim theologians, is substituted for God or His attributes is Allah (the encompassing of all His Names). Whether one may or may not use any names or attributes, though they are not found in the holy Quran, traditions, and the consensus of Muslim scholars, to refer to Allah, has been one of the most controversial issues among Muslim scholars, in particular philosophers and theologians. This is the question of touqifi (banned) names (namely, men are banned to apply any name to Allah of their own, for divine names are dependent on revelation). Another disagreement is whether the so-called names have any conformity with what is named or they are entirely strange names.Hanbalites and Asharites, from among the major theological Sunnite sects, have believed in the ban of such names and that the revealed Divine Names can be applied to Allah in perfect conformity i.e. Allah and His Divine Names are identical. Shiites and Mutazilites stand in the opposite side in the both questions. Though rejecting the ban of such names and yet having not a firm belief in that Allah and His Divine Names are identical, Matridites do not necessarily deny that the Divine Names, His Essence and Attributes are identical.Referring to Allah via many names such as, the Sun, Sunlight, the Sea, the Friend, the Beloved, the Associate, Charming, the Successor, the King, the Mother, the Bride, the Prey, the Hunter, and the like, Jalalu al-Din Muhammad Rumi (d. in 672 A.H.) has not been bound by their coming in the Holy Scriptures. Rumi, however, considers the true and best appropriate name of Allah, like the Night of Qadr, as being missed among such names. In both cases, he is not Asharite, but he has a Matridite position. Viewing his idea on the core essence of faith and the priority of Divine Mercy, Rumi considers the intention of man prior to his words and as the appropriate means of salvation.
