Potential of Folksonomies for Enhancing Professional Knowledge Organization Systems: a Review of Conceptions and Literature

This article aims to conceptualize the folksonomies, introduce their strengths and weaknesses, and suggest deployment of the strengths to enhance the professional knowledge organization systems. A library research used and the literature of folksonomies and related works reviewed and analyzed. Folksonomies and professional knowledge organization systems (e.g. thesauri, ontologies, and classification schemes) have strengths and weaknesses which enhancement of strengths and elimination of weaknesses must be scrutinized. It must be relied on strengths of folksonomies and discovery and analysis of the latent structures and patterns embedded in folksonomies in order to enhance and update the professional knowledge organization systems.
