Review of Safety Measures to Reduce Pedestrian Crashes

Most novice drivers do not have adequate skill to handle complex driving tasks. Moreover, most of these drivers are young with risky driving behaviors. Although, these behaviors such as speeding and tailgating are sometimes intentional, the investigations show errors in attention and fails to recognize hazards amongst young drivers. Therefore, this group involves in severe crashes and is known as a hazard for road users. This study aims to introduce the possible safety measures in order to reduce crashes involving young drivers. The paper reviews the related studies and classifies the safety measures into four categories. They include 1) implementing and improving graduated driver licensing, 2) enforcing and adjudicating laws related to young drivers, 3) management of parents / adults in their teens’ driving, and 4) Improving young driver training. The study can provide a comprehensive tool to help road engineers and professions while designing or dealing with safety issues.
