Qualitative study of the effect of modernization on youth role confusion

As a result of modernization process, our society has changed a lot; these changes effected the ways of defining personal identity. Identity is a very important subject which if realized, is a guarantee of personal and social health and otherwise it’s a great danger. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of modernization on young people role confusion. In this study qualitative approach and grounded-theory method were used to understand and interpret the effects of modernization on role confusion. The process of collecting data included 21 Semi-structured interviews with 20 to 30 years old people. Purposive sampling continued until data saturation. Data analysis was carried out simultaneously with data collection in the way qualitative content analysis. Findings of this study shows that 3 major categories due modernization, effects role confusion. These categories included wide range of choice, relationship restructuring, and inevitable consequences of industrial life. Obviously, using the findings of this research and paying attention to them in micro and macro policies such as economic, cultural, social, and educational policies, can establish the expectation of improvement in the process of youth identification and getting rid of the role confusion they’re experiencing.
