Asthma in Children: Emphasizing on prevention of re- admission

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that is characterized by symptoms of coughing or wheezing, shortness of breath. Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood and the first cause of absence from school. Asthma is the third leading cause of hospitalization for children under the age of 15 years. The incidence of wheezing in Iran over a recent year in children ages 6 to 7 and 13 to 14 years old is 7.6% and 10.7%, respectively.
The study was conducted considering the importance of the prevalence of children's asthma in the world and Iran and the role of nursing education in reducing the rehospitalization of children.

Material and Methods

This is a review study that is conducted based on online resources including (PubMed, Google Scholar, Magiran, and Sciences Direct), library resources and theses by using keyword (nursing education, asthma, and hospitalization) over the years 1994 and 2017.

Medical treatments without effective strategies such as nursing education cannot have an effect on re-admission. Education by multimedia has a better impact on improving the quality of life of children with asthma. The caregiver characteristics of the child have a profound effect on her readmission. In a study in Scotland, it was found that nurse planning and follow-up in the care of children with asthma reduced the incidence of the disease, with hospitalization decreasing from 25% to 8%

Discussion and Conclusion:

nursing education is one of the most important components in discharge from hospital. This training is appropriate to age, environment, culture, severity of disease and treatment protocol. It is suggested that a complete training package be issued to these patients when they are discharged to reduce their re-admission and reduce costs.
