The importance of sleep and Nurses’ Role in improving the sleep quality of hospitalized patients in cardiac care unit
Cardiovascular disease is the most common in the world. One of the most common psychiatric disorders in these patients is sleep disorders, which leads to poor quality of life. The purpose of this study is to determine the importance of sleep quality and Nurses’ Role in improving the sleep quality of hospitalized patients in cardiac care unit.
This article is a narrative review that was conducted by searching English and Persian articles existed in scientific databases including Magi ran, SID, Science direct and PubMed within 2007 -2017.
sleep disorder is one of the most common problems in cardiac care unit. This disorder is characterized by symptoms such as difficultly in going to sleep, persistent sleep and waking, early awaking, lack of feeling well or combination of these symptoms. Sleep plays a major role in the heart performance and sleep deprivation causes to intensify anxiety and anger, irritability as well as increase heart rate and the demand for myocardial oxygen.
With regard to the existence of relationship between sleep disorders and heart diseases and on the other hand since one of the roles of nurses is to create peaceful atmosphere and relaxation for patients, it is necessary to study the patients’ sleep by the nurse and educate the methods for improving the sleep quality in patients suffering from cardiovascular or heart disease.
