Abstract:
In recent years, the occurrence of sandstorms has been posing chronic challenges all around the world. It seems that their frequent occurrence and intensity is getting worse which requires more research endeavors. One major aspect of this phenomenon is the properties of particles which are required as inputs in many models and simulations for prediction of their movement and deposition as they move along their path. In this study, a literature survey was conducted for this phenomenon in Iran and around the world to quantify the impact of particle properties. The comparison reveals that particles are primarily made of SiO2, as the original component of quartz mineral. In most cases, the surface soil sampling analysis has led to a similar conclusion. Furthermore, the particles size distribution is one of the important criterions in determining the dust source. Based on this, it is probable that Khuzestan dusts came from abroad because of their fine size while we think that dusts in Zahedan have local sources. As such, we should be looking for a local way of dealing with this phenomenon in the latter area.
