Sociological explanation of the relationship between individualism and change in family structure
Due to structural and value changes in the last two decades, Iranian society has undergone extensive changes in the family domain. Various theoretical explanations for the causes of family change have been introduced. Some have emphasized on the role of cultural change such as the growth of individualism. With the rise of individualism, the emphasis on individual identity and independent personality becomes the basis for the regulation of social relations. The theories of Elizabeth Beck, Ritta Jallinoja and Eric Wiedmer were used to explain the research topic.
The study was conducted on 754 married people over 15 years old living in Bojnourd in 1398.
The results of Pearson's statistic indicate that there is a significant relationship between individualism and research variables.
The results of the canonical correlation analysis show that the Iranian family structure has changed under the influence of individualism in four important factors: marriage avoidance, social isolation, social support (family, important people and friends), power distribution (realm of power, power-building, and the way power is applied). Among these factors, social isolation (0.860) is the first variable to be influenced by individualism.
