Effectiveness of Well-being therapy on Psychological well-being index, Optimist and Life expectancy in Iranian Methamphetamine-dependent Men in abstinence phase, a randomized clinical trial
Wellbeing therapy is one of the new therapies in the field of positive psychology that originated from cognitive behavioral therapy. The present study was conducted with the aim of examining the effectiveness of well-being-therapy on Psychological well-being, optimist and life expectancy in Iranian Methamphetamine-dependent Men in abstinence phase.
Fifty (N = 50) males (ages 18-38 with mean: 26.6) among patients who referred to Addiction Treatment Center (stimulants) in Karaj were selected by purposive sampling method and were assigned randomly into experimental (25 individuals) and control (25 individuals) groups by office software. Experimental group was treated with Ryffchr('39')s Well-being therapy for 12 weekly sessions (50 min each session) and control group received only routine center treatments. Then, the two groups were evaluated in pre-test and post-test by Ryffchr('39')s Psychological Well-being Questionnaire (Response Rate = 96%), shiererchr('39')s optimist Questionnaire (Response Rate = 94%) and snyderchr('39')s hope Questionnaire (Response Rate = 91%) Were. Participants were given a urine test twice a week at a given threshold of 300 ng/ml to ensure adherence to abstinence. Data were analyzed by t-test and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).
The results showed that well-being therapy had a significant effect on improving psychological well-being with 24.3 confidence interval (31.85-16.75), optimism with 19.71 confidence interval (24.74-14.68) and hope with 17.02 confidence interval (22.48-11.56) (all p’s< 0/01).
The results of this study, while confirming the research background of the efficacy of positive therapies as an effective component in the process of recovery and avoidance of substance use, can be used in the evaluation, planning of therapeutic interventions and future research pathway in amphetamine users.
