The effect of Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff alcoholic extract on performance, mortality rate and lipid profile of broiler chickens with ascites syndrome
The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff alcoholic extract against the adverse effects resulted from ascites syndrome on performance and carcass characteristics. This experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design on 120 broiler chickens in the 4 treatments, 3 replicates with 10 chicks in each replicate. Treatments included: 1) basal diet in the standard temperature 2) basal diet + 0.1 % Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff alcoholic extract in the standard temperature 3) basal diet under cold stress 4) basal diet under 0.1 % Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff alcoholic extract under cold stress. Right ventricle/total ventricle index (RV/TV) and mortality rate (%) was significantly (P<0.05) increased in the cold stress groups compared to standard-temperature groups. RV/TV ratio was also significantly decreased (P<0.05) in the group 4 compared to the group 3. Mortality rate was significantly reduced (P<0.05) in the group 4 compared to the group 3. Cold stress significantly (P<0.05) reduced feed intake, growth and carcass weight in the cold-stress groups compared to the standard-temperature groups. Feed conversion ratio in cold the stress groups was significantly (P<0.05) higher than standard temperature groups. Cold stress caused a significant (P<0.05) decreasing of abdominal fat in the group 3 compared to the group 1. The mean serum cholesterol level in the group 2 decreased significantly (P<0.05) compared to group 1 and the mean serum HDL level significantly increased in the group 2 (P<0.05) compared to the group 1. It is concluded that supplementation of Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff alcoholic extract to broiler diet reduces ascites mortality an also improves chicken performance including feed conversion ratio, carcass fat deposit and serum lipid profile.
