Explanation of the farmers interest to use the new irrigation technologies in the In Javadabad district of Varamin

Water shortage and its socio-economic and environmental consequences are among the most important challenges of sustainable development especially in arid and semiarid areas. Various technologies have been introduced to cope with water shortages and increase irrigation efficiency. However, much of the water consumed in the agricultural sector is wasted on the traditional irrigation methods. This study aims to investigate the role of factors affecting farmers' desire to use greenhouse farming, drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation in Javadabad district of Varamin county in the year 2016. For this purpose, the required data were collected using the questionnaire of 173 rural households in 7 villages of the region by stratified random sampling. Farmers' interest in each of the new irrigation methods was measured using the Wilcoxon test, and the factors affecting them were analyzed using Stepwise linear regression. The findings indicated that, the farmers ' tendency to sprinkler irrigation in this region is statistically insignificant. Furthermore, about 55% of the variance of their attitude to adaptation of greenhouse farming can be explained by governmental financial support and facilities, the amount of agricultural water shortage, the quality of irrigation water and soil of agricultural lands and expecting economic benefits from irrigation technology. Also, 63 % of the variation of the farmers ' willingness to use drip irrigation is predictable by the variables of the education, the degree of recognition of the cost of drip irrigation, membership in the cooperative, the area under cultivation and the rate of irrigation water shortages.
