The Barriers to Rationality in the Holy Qur’an from a Psychological Point of View

Abstract:

One of the special distinctions between man and other creatures is rationality. Rationality has a special place in Islam and psychology, failure to prosper and benefit from it will have harmful consequences, and recognition of the barriers to rationality is one of the basic steps for human beings to benefit from this differentiating force. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the barriers to rationality in the Qur’an through a qualitative method of content analysis. To achieve this purpose, the verses of the Qur’an on rationality in the interpretations of Al-Mizan, Nemuna, Noor, and the like were examined. The findings showed that (a) the barriers to rationality from the perspective of the Qur’an could be divided into three categories: cognitive, emotional, and behavioral; (b) the cognitive barriers to rationality from the perspective of the Holy Qur’an included inattention to the voice of nature, selfforgetfulness, and superstitious beliefs; (c) Friendship and intimacy with the enemies of God, prejudice and stubbornness were some emotional barriers to rationality; (d) sin, lack of adherence to privacy and boundaries, wrong choice, worldliness, inattention to the signs of Divine mighty, inattention to the stages of creation and death, hypocrisy and concealment of truth, blind imitation, and inattention to the history of the ancients were considered the behavioral barriers to rationality.
