The Effectiveness of Interpersonal Psychotherapy in a Group Manner on the Severity of IBS Symptoms and Coping Strategies in women with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Abstract:
Introduction

Regarding the effect of stress on the severity of symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and the need to select the appropriate coping strategy, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy in a group way on the severity of IBS symptoms and coping strategies in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Method

The research method was a pretest-posttest with a control and experimental group. The statistical population of this study included all women with irritable bowel syndrome, Who came to Imam Reza Hospital of Mashhad, and 65 people were introduced. Of these, 20 were sampled who had entry criteria for research. The 20 subjects were randomly assigned into 2 groups of 10 controls. The experimental group participated in interpersonal psychotherapy sessions and did not receive an intervention control group that was placed on the waiting list. The sampling was done in a voluntary and accessible manner. Also, covariance analysis was used to analyze the data and to speed up the results of spss21 software.

Results

The results of the study showed that there is a significant difference between the patients in the interpersonal psychotherapy group with the control group for the irritable bowel syndrome syndrome. It was concluded that the mean scores of irritable bowel syndrome syndrome in the post-test stage were significantly lower for subjects in the interpersonal psychotherapy group than the control group (Pvalue<0.001). Also, patients in the interpersonal psychotherapy group reduced their emotional-avoidance coping strategies, and coping strategies raised their problem. But the control group did not show any difference in the use of coping strategies (Pvalue>0.001). Discussion and

Conclusion

According to the results of the study, it can be concluded that women with irritable bowel syndrome by participating in interpersonal psychotherapy sessions, in addition to reducing their symptoms, can also improve their coping strategies. As a result, it can be said that this treatment is an effective way to reduce psychological problems and improve mental illness of individuals
