Investigating The Feminine Language in Novel Entitled “The Birds of September” Written by Emily Nasrollah

Due to the profound social changes & the prevalence of feminist movements, attention was paid to differences in females and males at the end of 60th century (BC) then, “Language” and “Gender” became one of the common concepts of researchers in the context of sociology of language. One of the modern theories in the context of language and gender is Robin Lakoff’s – the famous Sociologist (1975). He believes that there is a relationship between females’ place in the society and the use of language to this gender. According to Lakoff, inequality in male and female social status has spread to the language inequality, which has led to the difference speech styles of women and men. The present article intends to study the function of language and linguistic features of women characters in the novel “The Bird of September” written by Emily Nasrollah- the Lebanese contemporary dominant author – using the descriptive-analytical research method based on sociolinguistic studies, in particular Lakoff’s theory and its variable. To this end, at first, the data gathered from the story text are matched with the variables of Lakoff’s language andgender theory, then the level of conformity of the novel characters’ language is evaluated by criteria of feminine language and the author’s success to create the language proportionate to characters’ gender.Findings suggest that although, in some cases, the linguistic characteristics of women in the story don’t conform to Lakoff’s intended variables in most, there is such a similarity whether in intellectual or linguistic contexts.
