Abstract:
Background & Aims

Sleep disorders are significantly higher in diabetic patients than in healthy people, and many factors contribute. The present study aimed to determine the relationship between sleep quality and metabolic control indices in patients with diabetes.

Materials & Methods

In this descriptive-correlational study, 135 diabetic patients referring to the diabetes center of Dehaghan city were selected by convenience sampling method. Data collection tools were metabolic control indices form and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Questionnaire. Metabolic control indices included height and weight, blood pressure, blood lipids, glycosylated hemoglobin, fasting blood glucose, and blood glucose 2 hours after a meal. Data were analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient, Spearman, and multivariate regression model in SPSS 22 software.

Results

The mean age of the participants was 48.66±19.26 years, and most (60.0%) were men. There was a significant direct relationship between body mass index, diastolic blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose with sleep quality score in diabetic patients (P < 0.05). The multivariate regression model showed that the variables of fasting blood sugar, age, body mass index and gender could predict the sleep quality score.

Conclusion

Some metabolic indicators have a direct and significant relationship with the sleep quality of diabetic patients. Therefore, evaluating patients’ sleep quality and knowing the related factors can help the treatment team, especially the nurses, plan to improve the sleep quality of patients and control diabetes.
